My Story
A simple request, a big response, and now l am hooked!
In November of 2014, I came across a very primitive Santa carving in an antique store. No intricate detail, no elaborate painting, just very simple and very special. I looked at the price and I thought to myself ‘Could I could make it for that much money?’ So, I thought for a while and decided why not give it a try!
I educated myself by watching some YouTube videos on carving and then I purchased a couple of good quality carving knives. My wife happened to notice that I was getting good at this! After a couple of small carved items, she asked if I could replicate a cooking utensil that she loved but was showing its age. And that was all it took…
Word got around and it so happened that one of my first commissioned projects was to replicate a spoon that belonged to the client’s grandmother. Three were to be made, one for the client, one for her daughter and one for her daughter-in-law. She loved the spoons that I made for her and her family and I was hooked! The idea that I could make something timeless and precious from repurposing some old wood, and the idea that it brought someone joy and meaning was beyond rewarding.
From this project, I realized that great sentimentality can be attached to such an item. The spoons that I was making may very well belong to her grandchildren one day. I was honored to be entrusted with such an endeavor. It was then and continues to be a responsibility I do not take lightly.
I strive to incorporate that same responsibility into every piece I make. My goal is to craft a timeless and sentimental piece that speaks to the new owner. A piece that is not only functional but beautiful to look at and beautiful in its capacity to represent its origin in nature.
